The Italian Society of Orthodontics (SIDO), a non-profit scientific association based in Milan, was founded in 1968 by a group of professional scholars who believed that the orthodontic discipline could play a fundamental role in achieving and maintaining a state of health and well-being by solving functional and aesthetic problems.
The main objective of the Italian Society of Orthodontics is the development of the orthodontic culture as part of the medical and dental disciplines.
This objective is pursued by involving all SIDO members in a constant co-operation with the Italian Universities and in the various activities of the Society such as meetings, congresses, refresher courses, scientific publications, panel discussions with representatives of prestigious international schools
SIDO is also one of the founding Societies of the Foederatio Europea Ortodontica (FEO) and is a Charter Member of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO). SIDO also organizes the Mediterranean Orthodontic Integration Project (MOIP) network. This important recognition proves that the prestigious role played by SIDO is nationally and internationally appreciated both on the scientific and on the professional level, as the increasing foreign attendance at the SIDO meetings seems to confirm.
Since the foundation of the Society, the number of members has been constantly increasing, thus proving the achievement of SIDO’s goals. With more than 3300 members, including Heads of the Italian Orthodontic Departments, SIDO is, from a numerical point of view, the first orthodontic association of Europe.
In May 2008 the SIDO with a revision of its Bylaws has introduced three main categories of Members: Temporary, Ordinary (the candidates) and Active (the electorate) ones. Only Members who have a recognized specialization in Europe in Orthodontics could become Active members.
As stated in the Bylaws of Society, in order to become SIDO Members all applicants should have completed a degree course in Medicine and Surgery (a legal authorization to the practice of dentistry is required) or in Dentistry and Dental Prosthesis.
The annual calendar of scientific events organized by SIDO can boast its high level of approach to scientific subjects as well as the prestige and the expertise of its national and foreign speakers. Among these initiatives, particular relevance is given to the National and to the International Congress, which always focuses on a topical subject and includes not only lectures and courses of renowned speakers, but also the presentation of table clinic, posters and short lectures.
A book of the Proceedings is usually published on the occasion of the National and of the International Congress. The best oral presentation, as voted by the Membership, is usually published in SIDO’s international journal.
During the last few years, particular relevance has been given to Information Technology, a new and growing field with increasing and improving programs to help and assist the orthodontist. Improving the exchange of information between the Society and its members via Internet and via E-mail has now become a priority in SIDO’s policy.

In 1999 SIDO founded Progress in Orthodontics (PiO) www.progressorthodontics.com,a official publication of SIDO in English with the abstracts of the articles in 4 languages: Italian, English, French and Spanish. At the end of 2005, the journal spread out in the Mediterranean Area with the name Progress in Orthodontics –Mediterranean Journal of Orthodontics. Manuscripts reporting the results of clinical or clinically relevant investigations are considered suitable for publication; significant case reports and proceedings of SIDO's meetings can also be published. All articles must be peer reviewed by a pool of Referees serving within the Editorial Board and the Advisory Committee, a group of renowned specialists in the different branches of orthodontics.
SIDO from 1992 to 2009 had a trimestrial scientific Journal, Ortognatodonzia Italiana (ORI). Starting from 2005, the journal is also on line at www.sido.it. From 2010 it will become Ori SIDO Magazine with the aim of spreading Orthodontics into the odontoiatric Area; ORI SIDO Magazine’s purpose is also to give a communication device in order to involve patients with posters or easy schedules that can be easily reproduced at disposal of patients, dentists and orthodontists. In 1987 the society started awarding the bi-annual Premio Mondiale SIDO (The SIDO International Prize) to Authors of deserving articles published in prestigious international journals. The aim was to reward exceptional achievements in the field of orthodontics. Past recipients have been S.Linder-Aronson (1987), C.Engstrom (1989), J.O. Andreasen (1991), B. Solow (1993), L.E.
